Micronised progesterone is a formulation of progesterone designed to improve absorption. Progesterone is a hormone involved in regulating the menstrual cycle, preparing the uterine lining for pregnancy and supporting early pregnancy.

2. What is Balamgest used for?

Depending on the diagnosis and prescribed route, micronised progesterone may be used for:

  • Fertility treatment: Supporting the uterine lining after ovulation or during IVF treatment.

  • Selected early pregnancies: Vaginal progesterone may reduce miscarriage risk in women who have early pregnancy bleeding and a history of miscarriage.

  • Menstrual problems: Treating certain cases of absent periods associated with insufficient progesterone.

  • Hormone replacement therapy (HRT): Protecting the uterine lining in women taking estrogen during menopause.

Progesterone is not a contraceptive, and it cannot prevent every miscarriage.

3. How is it taken?

The packaging specifies three possible administration routes.

The appropriate route, dose and treatment duration depend on the medical condition. Do not switch between routes without your doctor's instructions.

For oral treatment, progesterone is often prescribed at bedtime because it can cause sleepiness. Some oral formulations must be taken away from meals.
