ALCUF-DX 60ML SYRUP
Dextromethorphan HBr
Phenylephrine hydrochloride
Chlorpheniramine maleate
The combination is aimed at symptoms such as:
Dry or irritating cough
Runny nose
Sneezing
Nasal congestion/stuffy nose
Cold/allergy-associated upper-respiratory symptoms
It is therefore quite different from the Alcuf-LS Junior bottle you showed earlier.
Alcuf-LS Junior contains ambroxol + levosalbutamol + guaiphenesin and is oriented toward mucus/phlegm and bronchial airway symptoms.
Alcuf-DX contains dextromethorphan + phenylephrine + chlorpheniramine and is oriented more toward dry cough + cold/allergic nasal symptoms.
This is particularly important.
Dextromethorphan suppresses coughing. If someone has a cough that is producing substantial mucus/phlegm, suppressing the cough may not always be desirable because coughing helps clear secretions.
By contrast, Alcuf-LS contains medicines intended to help loosen mucus and improve airway clearance.
So these two syrups should not automatically be substituted for one another, even though both are marketed for cough/cold symptoms.
Chlorpheniramine can cause:
Sleepiness/drowsiness
Dizziness
Dry mouth or throat
Blurred vision in some people
Dextromethorphan can sometimes cause:
Drowsiness or dizziness
Nausea
Stomach upset
Phenylephrine can potentially cause:
Increased blood pressure
Faster heartbeat/palpitations
Headache
Nervousness or restlessness
The combination can therefore make someone sleepy, while phenylephrine can have stimulating cardiovascular effects.
Dextromethorphan has clinically important interactions with some medicines, particularly MAO inhibitors and certain antidepressants that affect serotonin. Combining serotonergic medicines can rarely contribute to serotonin syndrome.
Chlorpheniramine can add to the sedating effects of alcohol, sleeping medicines, sedating antihistamines and some other drugs.
Phenylephrine requires particular caution in people with high blood pressure, certain heart conditions, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, or some prostate/urinary problems, depending on the individual and formulation.
Visible information includes:
Brand: ALCUF-DX
Volume: 60 mL
Dosage form: Syrup
Dextromethorphan HBr, Phenylephrine Hydrochloride & Chlorpheniramine Maleate
The bottle contains a dark reddish-brown syrup.
The cap has graduated markings, but the cap markings should not be assumed to be an accurate dosing device unless the manufacturer's instructions specifically say so.
The photograph does not give me a sufficiently clear view of the complete dosage instructions or all the strength information. The correct dose is especially important if this is intended for a child, because cough-and-cold combinations are not dosed simply by the bottle size.
Don't use the dose from the Alcuf-LS Junior syrup for this Alcuf-DX syrup—they contain completely different medicines.
If you upload a clear photograph of the back/side label of the ALCUF-DX bottle or its carton, I can explain the exact strength per 5 mL, recommended dose, age restrictions, warnings, contraindications, and storage instructions shown by the manufacturer.
