1. Mefenamic acid — 100 mg

Mefenamic acid is an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug).

Actions:

• reduces pain

• reduces inflammation

• can contribute to fever reduction

It works mainly by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes and reducing prostaglandin production.

Common adverse effects: stomach irritation, nausea, abdominal discomfort and diarrhoea. NSAIDs can also cause more serious gastrointestinal or kidney problems, particularly with excessive/prolonged use.

2. Paracetamol — 250 mg

Paracetamol provides:

• Analgesic action → reduces pain

• Antipyretic action → reduces fever

It does not have the same anti-inflammatory effect as mefenamic acid.

Why combine them?

The combination provides two different mechanisms of pain/fever control:

Mefenamic acid → analgesic + anti-inflammatory
Paracetamol → analgesic + antipyretic

This type of combination is commonly used for painful febrile conditions, including certain childhood pain/fever situations, when prescribed.

⚠️ Important for children

Because this is a pediatric-looking suspension, the actual dose must be calculated from the child's age/weight and the exact concentration.

Do not give an additional paracetamol-containing medicine without accounting for the paracetamol already present in Mefett-P.

Likewise, don't combine it with another NSAID (such as ibuprofen, diclofenac or another mefenamic-acid product) unless specifically advised.

One important clarification

There are other manufacturers' suspensions containing mefenamic acid 50 mg + paracetamol 125 mg per 5 mL, but that is not the same formulation as the ACCOTT Mefett-P listing, which states 100 mg + 250 mg. (Tradeindia)
