Itraconazole is an antifungal medication that may be prescribed for several types of fungal infections, depending on the organism involved and the patient's medical condition.
Used for certain dermatophyte infections, including ringworm (tinea corporis), jock itch (tinea cruris) and athlete's foot (tinea pedis).
May be prescribed for onychomycosis, a fungal infection that can cause thickened, brittle or discoloured fingernails and toenails.
Treats susceptible yeast infections that produce lighter or darker patches on the skin, often affecting the chest, shoulders and back.
May be used for selected cases of histoplasmosis, blastomycosis and aspergillosis. These infections require specialist diagnosis and treatment.
Itraconazole is not effective against bacterial or viral infections.
Itraconazole belongs to the triazole class of antifungal medicines. It inhibits a fungal enzyme involved in producing ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes.
When ergosterol production is disrupted, the fungal membrane loses its normal structure and function. This inhibits fungal growth and allows the infection to be controlled.
The appropriate dose depends on the type and severity of infection, the formulation and individual patient factors. A 200 mg capsule is not necessarily the appropriate daily dose for every condition.
For conventional itraconazole capsules:
Take them immediately after a full meal unless your pharmacist gives formulation-specific instructions.
Swallow capsules whole with water.
Follow the prescribed schedule and treatment duration.
Do not double a dose to compensate for a missed dose.
Itraconazole capsules and oral solution have different absorption characteristics and must not be substituted for one another without medical advice.

Seek prompt medical attention if you develop yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, severe fatigue, swelling of the legs, difficulty breathing or a severe rash.
Heart disease: Itraconazole can cause or worsen congestive heart failure. It is contraindicated in certain patients with ventricular dysfunction.
Liver disease: Rare but serious liver injury has been reported. Your doctor may recommend liver function tests.
Drug interactions: Itraconazole interacts with numerous medicines, including some statins, antiarrhythmics, sedatives and anticoagulants. Certain combinations are contraindicated.
Pregnancy: Use requires medical assessment. It should not be taken during pregnancy for fungal nail infections.
Reduced stomach acidity: Proton pump inhibitors, other acid-reducing medicines and antacids can interfere with absorption of conventional itraconazole capsules.

Important: The 200 mg strength contains twice the indicated amount of itraconazole as the 100 mg strength. It is not automatically more effective or suitable for every infection. Do not switch strengths without consulting your prescriber.
Keep the capsules in their original packaging, protected from moisture and excessive heat. Follow the storage temperature printed on the carton, keep them out of reach of children and do not use them after the expiry date.
Medical note: ITRAFOTT-200 is a prescription antifungal medicine with potentially serious heart, liver and drug-interaction risks. The diagnosis, dose and duration should be confirmed by a qualified healthcare professional.
