Important: The pictured batch has expired
The visible expiry date is January 2026. As of September 2026, this batch is past its labelled expiry date and should not be used. The information below describes omeprazole generally, not the suitability of this expired pack.
Omeprazole reduces the amount of acid produced by the stomach. Doctors commonly prescribe it for the following conditions.
Acid reflux and GERD
Helps relieve frequent heartburn and acid regurgitation and allows inflammation of the oesophagus caused by acid reflux to heal.
Stomach and duodenal ulcers
Reduces stomach acid to help ulcers heal. It may also be prescribed with antibiotics to treat ulcers associated with Helicobacter pylori infection.
Prevention of certain medicine-related ulcers
Sometimes prescribed to people taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen or diclofenac, who have an increased risk of developing ulcers.
Omeprazole is also used for uncommon conditions involving excessive stomach acid production, such as Zollinger–Ellison syndrome.
Omeprazole 20 mg
After absorption, the medicine reaches the acid-producing cells in the stomach.
Blocks acid pumps
Inhibits the proton pumps responsible for the final stage of acid production.
Reduces stomach acidity
Helps relieve acid-related symptoms and supports healing of damaged tissue.
Omeprazole is not an immediate-acting antacid. Symptom relief can begin within the first few days, but its full acid-suppressing effect generally takes several days of regular use.
For many adult acid-related conditions, 20 mg once daily is a commonly prescribed regimen, but the appropriate dose and duration depend on the diagnosis.
It is generally taken before a meal, often before breakfast.
Swallow the gastro-resistant capsule whole with water. Do not crush or chew its contents.
Follow the prescribed treatment duration, even if symptoms improve sooner.
If a dose is missed, take it when remembered unless it is nearly time for the next dose. Do not double doses.
Some formulations permit opening the capsule and mixing the intact granules with suitable soft food. Check the specific product leaflet or ask a pharmacist before doing this.

Persistent heartburn should not automatically be treated indefinitely with omeprazole. Unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools or persistent vomiting warrant prompt medical assessment. Sudden or severe chest pain, particularly with breathlessness or sweating, requires emergency evaluation rather than treatment as presumed acidity.
Key distinction: Ometime-20 treats acid-related conditions; it is not a general digestive supplement or a painkiller. Use an in-date supply and follow the prescribed instructions for your particular condition.
