ALCUF-DX 100 mL
The label clearly identifies:
Dextromethorphan hydrobromide
Chlorpheniramine maleate
Phenylephrine hydrochloride
Quantity: 100 mL
Brand: ALCUF-DX
Type: Cough Formula
For the Accott ALCUF-DX formulation, the listed strength is:
These strengths are listed specifically for Accott's ALCUF-DX. (1mg)
This combination is intended primarily for a dry, irritating cough, particularly when it occurs together with cold/allergy symptoms such as:
Runny nose
Sneezing
Nasal congestion
Watery eyes
Throat irritation
Dextromethorphan suppresses the cough, chlorpheniramine treats histamine-related nasal symptoms, and phenylephrine acts as a nasal decongestant. (1mg)
This is the key difference between this bottle and the ALCUF-LS you showed previously.
ALCUF-DX → dry cough
ALCUF-LS → cough with mucus/phlegm
Dextromethorphan deliberately suppresses coughing, whereas coughing can be useful for clearing significant amounts of mucus. Combination products containing dextromethorphan/phenylephrine/chlorpheniramine are therefore generally not appropriate to self-select for a cough producing substantial phlegm without medical advice. (DailyMed)
Possible effects include:
Drowsiness
Dizziness
Dry mouth/throat
Blurred vision
Restlessness
Nausea
Headache
Chlorpheniramine is the component most associated with sleepiness, so despite the earlier “no drowsiness” claim on the honey product, this ALCUF-DX combination can cause drowsiness. (Apollo Pharmacy)
Phenylephrine can also cause palpitations, increased blood pressure, nervousness or sleeplessness in some people.
One particularly important interaction is with MAO inhibitors (MAOIs). Dextromethorphan-containing products should not be taken with an MAOI or shortly after stopping one because of potentially serious interactions. (Drugs.com)
Alcohol, sedatives and tranquilizers can also increase the sedating effects of this combination. (DailyMed)
Tell a doctor/pharmacist before using it if the person has:
High blood pressure
Heart disease
Thyroid disease
Glaucoma
Difficulty urinating/enlarged prostate
Asthma or other breathing problems
A chronic cough
A cough producing substantial mucus (DailyMed)
This is particularly important if you're considering this for a child. Do not use the adult formulation simply because the child has a dry cough. Pediatric use depends on the exact formulation, age and medical advice. Cough-and-cold combination products can cause serious problems if incorrectly dosed in young children. (MedlinePlus)
The Indian cough-management guidance for this particular three-drug combination gives age-specific dosing, but because your bottle is an Rx product, the prescription/label for this exact product should take priority rather than using a generic dosing table. (Docvidya)
Don't combine ALCUF-DX with another cough/cold syrup without checking the ingredients. Multiple products can contain the same or interacting medicines, potentially causing an overdose. (MedlinePlus)
The currently listed Accott product information says to store below 25°C. (1mg)
ALCUF-DX 100 mL = Dextromethorphan 10 mg + Chlorpheniramine 2 mg + Phenylephrine 5 mg per 5 mL.
In simple terms:
Dextromethorphan → stops/reduces dry coughing
Chlorpheniramine → reduces allergy/cold symptoms
Phenylephrine → relieves nasal blockage
It is therefore fundamentally different from ALCUF-LS, which is designed around mucus clearance and airway opening.
