This is the active antiseptic ingredient.
Povidone-iodine is a complex of povidone (polyvinylpyrrolidone) and iodine. It gradually releases free iodine, which has antimicrobial activity against a broad range of microorganisms.
It can act against:
many bacteria
many fungi
numerous viruses
some other microorganisms
So the “Kills Germs Effectively” statement on the label refers primarily to the antiseptic action of povidone-iodine.
A povidone-iodine gargle is intended for local antiseptic/oral-pharyngeal hygiene, rather than systemic treatment.
It may be used for short-term reduction of microorganisms in the mouth and throat, according to the product directions or a clinician's advice.
This is a gargle, not a drinkable oral solution.
Typical use is:
Gargle → keep it in the mouth/throat briefly → spit it out.
Do not intentionally swallow the preparation.
Because it contains iodine:
Avoid use if you have a known iodine/povidone-iodine allergy.
Repeated or prolonged use can increase iodine exposure.
