About NORTHECOT-10 TAB

Northecot-10 Tablets Northecot-10 is a controlled-release oral tablet containing Norethisterone Acetate 10 mg. The product shown in the image is manufactured by Accott and is packed as 10 × 10 tablets.

1. Composition

Each controlled-release tablet contains:

IngredientQuantityFunctionNorethisterone Acetate IP10 mgActive pharmaceutical ingredientPharmaceutical excipientsq.s.Provide tablet structure, stability and controlled drug release

q.s. = quantum sufficient, meaning the quantity required to manufacture the tablet to the specified weight and characteristics.

2. Norethisterone Acetate

Norethisterone acetate 10 mg is the active ingredient.

It is a synthetic progestogen (progestin) with progesterone-like activity. After administration, it exerts effects on progesterone receptors and influences the endometrium and reproductive hormonal system.

Pharmacological actions

Norethisterone acetate can:

  • Produce progestogenic effects

  • Alter the growth and shedding of the endometrium

  • Suppress or modify menstrual bleeding

  • Influence cervical mucus and reproductive tissues

  • At sufficiently high doses, suppress gonadotropin-dependent ovarian activity

It is therefore used under medical supervision for various menstrual and gynecological disorders, depending on the prescribed indication.

3. Controlled-release formulation

The important feature of Northecot-10 is that it is labelled “Controlled Release Tablets.”

A controlled-release formulation is designed to regulate the release of norethisterone acetate from the tablet.

The formulation may use a polymeric matrix or other release-controlling technology. As fluid penetrates the tablet, the drug is gradually released rather than being released all at once.

Advantages of controlled release can include:

  • More controlled drug release

  • Maintenance of drug exposure over a longer period

  • Potential reduction in fluctuations in drug concentration

  • Convenient dosing in appropriate clinical situations

The tablet should not be crushed, chewed, or modified unless the product information specifically permits it, because altering a controlled-release dosage form can change its release characteristics.

4. Excipients

The photograph does not show a sufficiently clear complete ingredient declaration for the inactive ingredients. Therefore, the exact excipient names and quantities cannot be reliably stated from the image alone.

For a controlled-release tablet, excipients may belong to the following categories:

A. Diluent / filler

Provides bulk and helps achieve the required tablet weight.

Examples in pharmaceutical formulations can include:

  • Lactose

  • Microcrystalline cellulose

  • Dibasic calcium phosphate

The particular excipient used in Northecot-10 should be confirmed from the manufacturer's approved formula.

B. Binder

Provides cohesion between powder particles and helps produce mechanically strong tablets.

Examples include:

  • Povidone

  • Hydroxypropyl cellulose

  • Other pharmaceutical binders

C. Release-controlling polymer

This is particularly important in a controlled-release formulation.

Possible polymer categories include:

  • Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC)

  • Cellulose derivatives

  • Other hydrophilic or hydrophobic matrix-forming polymers

These are examples of possible formulation materials and are not confirmed ingredients of Northecot-10.

D. Lubricant

Reduces friction during tablet compression and ejection.

A commonly used pharmaceutical lubricant is:

  • Magnesium stearate

E. Glidant

Improves powder flow during manufacturing.

Examples include:

  • Colloidal silicon dioxide

  • Talc

F. Coating materials

If the controlled-release tablet is film-coated, coating materials may include:

  • Film-forming polymer

  • Plasticizer

  • Opacifier

  • Colouring agent

Again, the exact coating composition must be confirmed from the manufacturer's documentation.

5. Strength calculation

The stated strength is:

Norethisterone acetate = 10 mg/tablet

Therefore:

  • 1 tablet → 10 mg

  • 10 tablets → 100 mg

  • 1 strip of 10 tablets → 100 mg

  • 10 strips × 10 tablets = 100 tablets → 1,000 mg (1 g) of norethisterone acetate in total

This calculation refers only to the active ingredient, not the total tablet weight.

7. Suitable composition for a product catalogue

You can write the composition professionally as:

COMPOSITION:
Each controlled-release tablet contains:
Norethisterone Acetate IP 10 mg
Excipients q.s.
Dosage form: Controlled-release tablets.

Important distinction

If you need the exact manufacturing composition—for example, Norethisterone Acetate 10 mg + exact quantity of HPMC/MCC/lactose/PVP/magnesium stearate and coating materials per tablet—that information cannot be determined from the front-pack photograph. It should come from the manufacturer's approved Master Formula/Certificate of Analysis/product specification.
