Piroxcot Injection
The back of the box also says to store it below 30°C and protect it from direct sunlight.
Piroxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It reduces the production of prostaglandins involved in pain and inflammation.
It can therefore reduce:
Piroxicam is used for inflammatory conditions such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. DailyMed
One ampoule = 40 mg piroxicam.
That's a relatively substantial amount, and piroxicam has a long duration of action. It should be used exactly as prescribed rather than repeatedly administered simply because pain returns.
The package specifically says IM only, so this product should not be injected intravenously.
Like other NSAIDs, piroxicam can cause stomach/intestinal ulcers and bleeding, sometimes without warning. It can also increase cardiovascular risks such as heart attack and stroke, with risk affected by the patient's underlying health and duration of treatment. DailyMed
It can also affect the kidneys, particularly in people with kidney disease, dehydration, heart failure, or other risk factors. DailyMed
Other possible problems include:
A history of asthma, hives, or allergic reactions after aspirin or other NSAIDs is particularly important because piroxicam can cause serious hypersensitivity reactions in susceptible people. DailyMed
🚨 Important because of the previous injection you showedYou previously showed Redflam Injection (diclofenac 75 mg/mL).
Diclofenac and piroxicam are both NSAIDs.
Therefore, they generally should not be treated as two independent pain injections to take together unless a doctor has specifically instructed this. Combining NSAIDs can increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding, kidney problems and other adverse effects without necessarily providing a proportional benefit.
So, if your prescription contains both Redflam and Piroxcot, don't assume that both injections should be administered. The prescriber/pharmacist should confirm the intended regimen.
| Injection | Active ingredient | Main purpose | Drug class |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trancot | Tranexamic acid 500 mg/5 mL | Helps control certain bleeding | Antifibrinolytic |
| Redflam | Diclofenac 75 mg/mL | Pain + inflammation | NSAID |
| Piroxcot | Piroxicam 40 mg/2 mL | Pain + inflammation | NSAID |
Redflam and Piroxcot are particularly important to distinguish because both are NSAIDs.
Also, Trancot isn't a painkiller; it has a completely different purpose.
If these three injections were prescribed together for the same patient/episode, send me the prescription or the remaining medicines. I can map out what each medicine is intended to do, which ones overlap, and which combinations deserve particular caution.
