Actose-100
Brand: Actose-100
Active ingredient: Lactulose
Form: Oral solution
Pack size: 100 mL
Manufacturer/brand: Accott
The bottle is amber/brown, with a white label and green packaging.
Lactulose is a synthetic sugar (disaccharide) that acts as an osmotic laxative.
It isn't absorbed significantly in the small intestine. When it reaches the colon, intestinal bacteria break it down into organic acids. This increases the amount of water retained in the bowel and softens the stool, making it easier to pass.
In simple terms:
Lactulose → draws/retains water in the bowel → softer stool → easier bowel movement.
Lactulose is commonly used for constipation, particularly when stools are:
Hard
Dry
Difficult to pass
Infrequent
It generally does not work immediately like a stimulant laxative. It may take a day or two for its full laxative effect.
Lactulose is also used under medical supervision for hepatic encephalopathy, a complication of advanced liver disease.
In that situation, lactulose isn't being used simply as a laxative. It helps reduce the absorption of ammonia from the intestine by promoting its conversion/excretion in the colon.
The dosing strategy for hepatic encephalopathy is very different from ordinary constipation, so that use should be managed by a doctor.
Because lactulose changes the water and fermentation environment in the intestine, common effects include:
Gas/flatulence
Bloating
Abdominal cramps
Loose stools
Diarrhea
Nausea
These effects can be particularly noticeable when starting treatment or when too much is taken.
An excessive dose can produce significant diarrhea.
Prolonged or severe diarrhea can cause dehydration and disturbances of body salts/electrolytes such as potassium and sodium.
Therefore, the goal isn't simply to take enough to cause frequent watery stools. For ordinary constipation, the dose is generally adjusted to achieve comfortable, soft bowel movements.
This is worth mentioning because lactulose is a sugar-based molecule.
Although lactulose is used as a laxative and is not handled like ordinary dietary sugar, some lactulose preparations can contain small amounts of other sugars depending on their manufacturing process.
If someone has diabetes or needs strict carbohydrate control, the specific product's excipient/composition information should be checked rather than assuming that every lactulose syrup is identical.
For constipation, follow the dose prescribed on the package or by the doctor.
General practical points:
Measure the dose accurately.
It can usually be taken with or without food.
Drink adequate fluids unless a doctor has told you to restrict fluids.
If it causes excessive diarrhea, the dose may be too high.
Don't keep increasing the dose because it hasn't worked after a few hours; lactulose can take time to work.
Lactulose shouldn't simply be used to treat unexplained severe abdominal symptoms.
Seek medical evaluation if constipation is accompanied by:
Severe or persistent abdominal pain
Repeated vomiting
Marked abdominal swelling
Blood in the stool
Inability to pass stool and gas
Unexplained weight loss
Persistent/recurrent constipation
These can indicate a problem that requires evaluation rather than simply more laxative.

Many lactulose products have different concentrations/formulations.
So I would not use the bottle size (100 mL) to determine the dose.
If you upload a clear photograph of the back/side of the Actose-100 box, I can read the exact lactulose concentration, recommended dose for adults/children, warnings, storage instructions, and the manufacturer's complete composition.
