About PROSTE-D TAB

PROSTE-D Tablets

The medicine in your photo is PROSTE-D Tablets, labeled as Tamsulosin HCl MR + Dutasteride. It is a prescription medicine primarily used for an enlarged prostate (BPH) in men.

1. What are the two medicines?

Tamsulosin HCl (modified/controlled release)

  • An alpha-1 blocker.
  • Relaxes the smooth muscles around the prostate and bladder outlet.
  • This makes urine pass more easily and can improve a weak stream, difficulty starting urination, urgency and incomplete emptying.
  • Its symptom-relieving effect generally occurs relatively quickly compared with dutasteride. Mayo Clinic

Dutasteride

  • A 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor.
  • It reduces conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
  • Lower DHT gradually causes an enlarged prostate to shrink.
  • This can reduce the risk of acute urinary retention and the need for prostate surgery. MedlinePlus

So, in simple terms:

Tamsulosin → relaxes the prostate/bladder outlet → urine flows more easily.
Dutasteride → reduces DHT → prostate gradually becomes smaller.

2. What is it usually prescribed for?

The main indication is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)—a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate.

Typical BPH symptoms include:

  • Frequent urination
  • Getting up repeatedly at night to urinate
  • Weak or slow urine stream
  • Difficulty starting urine
  • Stopping and starting while urinating
  • Urgency
  • Feeling that the bladder hasn't completely emptied
  • Dribbling after urination

The combination addresses both the muscle obstruction and the enlarged prostate itself. Medicines.org.uk

3. What strength is it?

The photograph clearly shows the names of the ingredients but does not clearly show their strengths.

A very common combination is:

  • Dutasteride 0.5 mg
  • Tamsulosin HCl 0.4 mg

This is the standard strength used in many combination products. DailyMed

However, don't assume that your particular PROSTE-D strip contains those exact strengths based only on this photograph. Check the back of the strip or the prescription.

4. How is it generally taken?

For the commonly used 0.5 mg/0.4 mg combination, the usual regimen is one dose once daily, commonly approximately 30 minutes after the same meal each day. The exact instructions from the prescribing doctor should take priority. Medicines.org.uk

Because the product shown says MR (modified release), it should generally be swallowed whole rather than crushed or chewed.

5. Important side effects

The more important possible effects include:

  • Dizziness/light-headedness, particularly when standing up
  • Low blood pressure
  • Ejaculation problems/reduced semen volume
  • Reduced sexual desire
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Breast tenderness or enlargement
  • Occasionally headache or weakness

Ejaculation problems, erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, dizziness and breast-related effects are among the recognized adverse effects of the combination. DailyMed

Be especially careful when standing up suddenly, particularly when you first start treatment, because tamsulosin can lower blood pressure.

6. Important warning about cataract surgery

If you have cataract or glaucoma surgery planned, tell the eye surgeon that you are taking or have previously taken tamsulosin. Alpha-blockers including tamsulosin have been associated with intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS) during eye surgery. DailyMed

7. Dutasteride has a particularly important warning

Dutasteride is not intended for women or children. Pregnant women should not handle leaking/crushed dutasteride capsules/tablets because dutasteride can be absorbed through the skin and may harm development of a male fetus. DailyMed

It also affects PSA (prostate-specific antigen) levels. Doctors therefore need to know that you are taking dutasteride when interpreting PSA results. MedlinePlus

8. How long does it take to work?

This is important because the two components behave differently.

  • Tamsulosin: urinary symptoms may improve relatively soon.
  • Dutasteride: works slowly. Noticeable improvement may take several months, and maximum prostate-related benefit can take 6 months or longer. MedlinePlus

Therefore, someone may feel better from the urinary-flow component while the prostate-shrinking effect is still developing.

9. Does it treat prostate cancer?

No. This combination is intended for BPH. Dutasteride-containing products are not approved for prevention of prostate cancer. DailyMed

BPH and prostate cancer are different conditions, although they can produce some similar urinary symptoms.

10. When should you seek medical attention?

Get urgent medical attention if there is:

  • Complete inability to urinate
  • Fainting or severe dizziness
  • Severe allergic reaction/swelling or difficulty breathing
  • Significant bleeding or other severe unexpected symptoms

Acute urinary retention from prostate obstruction can require immediate treatment. Medicines.org.uk
