This combination may be prescribed for certain susceptible bacterial infections, depending on the organism and the patient's medical condition.
Amoxicillin: A penicillin antibiotic that interferes with bacterial cell-wall formation.
Cloxacillin: A penicillin antibiotic designed to resist breakdown by certain bacterial enzymes, particularly those produced by susceptible staphylococci.
Lactobacillus: A probiotic intended to help maintain intestinal bacterial balance during antibiotic treatment.
Possible clinical uses of the antibiotic components include selected skin and soft-tissue infections, respiratory infections and other susceptible bacterial infections. However, the combination is not automatically appropriate for every infection, and its suitability depends on the diagnosis.
Amoxicillin + Cloxacillin
Both antibiotics interfere with bacterial cell-wall synthesis, which can kill susceptible bacteria.
Lactobacillus
Helps replenish beneficial intestinal microorganisms. It may reduce some antibiotic-associated gastrointestinal symptoms, although benefits depend on the probiotic strain and dose.
Take this medicine only at the dose and frequency prescribed by your doctor. The correct schedule depends on the ingredient strengths, type of infection, kidney function and other individual factors.
Swallow the capsule with water. Food instructions should be checked against the exact formulation, because cloxacillin absorption can be affected by meals. Do not discontinue or extend treatment without medical advice.
Common side effects of these antibiotics include nausea, vomiting, loose stools, abdominal discomfort and skin rash.
Seek urgent medical care if you experience:
Difficulty breathing or swelling of the face, lips or throat.
A severe blistering or peeling rash.
Severe or persistent watery diarrhea, particularly with fever or blood.
Tell your prescriber if you have a history of penicillin allergy, kidney or liver disease, or if you take other medicines such as warfarin or methotrexate.
This medicine treats susceptible bacterial infections, not viral illnesses such as the common cold or influenza. Unnecessary antibiotic use increases the risk of antimicrobial resistance.
The Lactobacillus component does not guarantee prevention of antibiotic-associated diarrhea. People who are severely immunocompromised or critically ill should discuss probiotic use with their treating clinician.
