About ACCORINE-600 TAB

Accorine-600

What is N-acetylcysteine 600 mg?

N-acetylcysteine is a medicine with several medical uses. For oral tablets, one of its main uses is as a mucolytic—it makes thick, sticky mucus less viscous, helping a person cough it up more easily. It is used particularly in respiratory conditions associated with excessive/thick sputum, such as chronic bronchitis and bronchiectasis. (HWE Clinical Guidance)

NAC is also the active drug used medically as an antidote for paracetamol (acetaminophen) overdose, but that treatment uses specific dosing and medical supervision; a 600-mg oral tablet should not be used to self-treat an overdose. (MedlinePlus)

How the 600-mg tablet is commonly used

For adult mucolytic treatment, 600 mg once daily is a commonly used regimen for appropriate formulations. Some clinical guidance recommends taking it after food and maintaining adequate fluid intake because hydration supports the mucus-thinning effect. (NTAG)

However, don't assume that 600 mg once daily is the correct dose for you simply from the strength on the box. The appropriate dose depends on why it was prescribed and the particular formulation.

What it does in the lungs

Think of mucus as becoming very thick and sticky during some respiratory illnesses.

NAC → breaks down/disrupts mucus structure → mucus becomes less sticky → easier to cough out.

It therefore isn't primarily a cough suppressant. In fact, if you're taking it for thick phlegm, coughing is part of how the loosened mucus is removed.

Common side effects

Possible effects include:

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Stomach discomfort

  • Diarrhea

  • Unpleasant taste/odour

  • Headache

More significant reactions can include rash, itching, wheezing, chest tightness, or difficulty breathing/swallowing, which require prompt medical attention. (MedlinePlus)

Important precautions

1. Asthma/wheezing:
NAC can occasionally cause bronchospasm in susceptible people. If you have asthma or develop wheezing or breathing difficulty after taking it, seek medical advice. (MedlinePlus)

2. Stomach ulcers:
NAC may affect the gastric mucosal barrier, so caution is advised if you have a history of peptic ulcer disease. (Kent and Medway Formulary)

3. Antibiotics:
Some prescribing guidance recommends separating oral antibiotics from acetylcysteine by about 2 hours. (NTAG)

4. Nitroglycerin/glyceryl trinitrate:
NAC can interact with glyceryl trinitrate, potentially increasing effects such as headache or lowering blood pressure, so tell your doctor/pharmacist if you take it. (Kent and Medway Formulary)

5. Sodium restriction:
Some 600-mg effervescent acetylcysteine formulations contain a significant amount of sodium. This matters if you have been instructed to restrict sodium because of heart or kidney problems. (BEST)

One important point about your particular box

The photograph says “N-Acetylcysteine Tablets 600 mg”, rather than clearly saying “effervescent tablets.” That's important because dosing instructions and excipients can differ between formulations. I would not assume this particular Accorine-600 tablet is identical to the 600-mg effervescent products referenced in some guidelines.

If you tell me why you were prescribed/bought Accorine-600 (for example, cough with phlegm, sinus problem, fatty liver, kidney issue, fertility, or something else), I can explain whether NAC 600 mg makes sense for that condition, the usual dose, best time to take it, what medicines to avoid with it, and how long it is normally taken.
