1. Mefenamic Acid — 250 mg

  • A non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the fenamate group.

  • Inhibits cyclooxygenase enzymes and reduces prostaglandin production.

  • Provides pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects.

  • Particularly useful for menstrual cramps and colicky abdominal pain. (Rwanda FDA)

2. Dicyclomine Hydrochloride — 10 mg

  • An antispasmodic/anticholinergic (antimuscarinic) medicine.

  • Relaxes smooth muscle in the gastrointestinal tract.

  • Helps reduce cramping, spasms and abdominal colicky pain. (Torque Pharma)

Why they are combined

The two ingredients address pain in different ways:

Mefenamic acid → reduces pain/inflammation
Dicyclomine → relaxes muscle spasms/cramps

Therefore, this combination is commonly used for menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea), abdominal cramps and intestinal/colicky pain. (Rwanda FDA)

Important precautions

  • Mefenamic acid can cause gastric irritation, ulceration or gastrointestinal bleeding, particularly with prolonged use or in people at higher risk.

  • Taking it with or after food may reduce stomach irritation. (Blue Cross Laboratories)

  • Dicyclomine can cause dry mouth, dizziness, blurred vision, constipation and sometimes drowsiness.

  • Avoid combining it with other NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen or nimesulide unless specifically advised.

  • Tell your doctor about kidney disease, stomach ulcers/bleeding, asthma triggered by NSAIDs, glaucoma, urinary-retention problems, or pregnancy.

Final composition

MEFETT-SPAS = Mefenamic Acid 250 mg + Dicyclomine Hydrochloride 10 mg + excipients q.s. per tablet. (Rwanda FDA)
