Class3rd-generation cephalosporin antibiotic

The photograph clearly identifies it as Ceftriaxone Injection IP, Cefcum 1 gm. A 1-g ceftriaxone vial contains the equivalent of 1000 mg ceftriaxone, generally supplied as ceftriaxone sodium. Bosch Pharmaceuticals

What it is used for

Ceftriaxone is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used for bacterial infections. Depending on the organism and clinical situation, it can be used for infections such as:

  • Pneumonia and other serious respiratory infections
  • Urinary-tract infections
  • Skin/soft-tissue infections
  • Abdominal infections
  • Bone and joint infections
  • Bloodstream infections/sepsis
  • Meningitis
  • Certain infections requiring hospital/perioperative antibiotic treatment

It does not treat viral infections such as influenza or an ordinary viral cold.

How it differs from the previous injection

You showed Cefcum-S 1.5 gm immediately before this.

Cefcum 1 gmCefcum-S 1.5 gm
Ceftriaxone1000 mgUsually 1000 mg
SulbactamNone500 mg in common 1.5-g formulations
Total labeled combination1 g1.5 g
Antibiotic classCephalosporinCephalosporin + β-lactamase inhibitor

For example, Indian regulatory documentation describes a 1.5-g ceftriaxone/sulbactam formulation as ceftriaxone 1000 mg + sulbactam 500 mg. However, the exact composition should be confirmed from the particular Cefcum-S vial/leaflet rather than assumed solely from the brand name. National Payment Corporation of India

Important safety information

This should not be self-injected. The correct dose and whether it should be given IM or IV depend on the infection, age/weight, kidney/liver function and other clinical factors.

Important precautions include:

  • A serious allergy can occur, particularly in someone with a previous severe reaction to cephalosporins or other beta-lactam antibiotics. DailyMed
  • Severe or persistent diarrhea after treatment can indicate C. difficile-associated diarrhea/colitis. DailyMed
  • Calcium-containing IV solutions must not be mixed or administered simultaneously with ceftriaxone through the same IV system because precipitation can occur. This is particularly important in newborns. DailyMed
  • Ceftriaxone has specific restrictions in newborns ≤28 days, particularly premature or hyperbilirubinemic newborns. DailyMed

One important distinction: the vial in this photograph is ceftriaxone alone, whereas your previous photograph showed a ceftriaxone + sulbactam combination. They should not automatically be considered interchangeable simply because both contain ceftriaxone.

If you're comparing these two injections because a doctor prescribed one and the pharmacy supplied the other, tell me what was written on the prescription (or upload a photo of it), and I can explain exactly whether the two prescriptions are equivalent.
