Cefuroxime axetil is an oral prodrug that is converted in the body to cefuroxime, an antibiotic that works by interfering with bacterial cell-wall formation. It is used against certain bacterial infections, when the causative bacteria are susceptible to cefuroxime.
Depending on the doctor's diagnosis, cefuroxime may be prescribed for infections such as certain:
Ear, nose and throat infections
Respiratory-tract infections
Urinary-tract infections
Skin and soft-tissue infections
Other susceptible bacterial infections
It does not treat viral infections such as the common cold or influenza.
Because this is an antibiotic for children, the dose should be determined by a doctor based on factors such as the child's age, body weight, infection and kidney function. The strength and amount of medicine to be given should not be estimated from the product photograph alone.
The dry syrup needs to be properly reconstituted with the supplied sterile water according to the manufacturer's instructions. The bottle should generally be shaken well before each dose so that the medicine is evenly distributed.
Possible side effects can include diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort and rash. A child who develops signs of a serious allergic reaction—such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face/lips, or a severe or rapidly spreading rash—needs urgent medical attention.
Cefuroxime should be used only when prescribed, particularly in children. Tell the prescribing doctor about any previous allergy to cefuroxime, cephalosporins, penicillins or other antibiotics.
Note: The photograph identifies the product and its packaging, but it is not sufficient to determine the appropriate dose or duration of treatment.
