The photograph shows Cipcot-500 manufactured by Accott Healthcare. The pack states “Ciprofloxacin Tablets IP” and the strength is 500 mg. Accott’s product information also identifies Cipcot-500 as containing ciprofloxacin 500 mg. (OSAKA88)
Drug class: Fluoroquinolone antibiotic
Type: Broad-spectrum antibacterial
Ciprofloxacin works by inhibiting bacterial enzymes called DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. These enzymes are essential for bacterial DNA replication and repair. Blocking them prevents susceptible bacteria from multiplying and ultimately causes bacterial death. (DailyMed)
Important: It treats bacterial infections; it does not treat ordinary viral infections such as most common colds or influenza.
Depending on the organism and local antibiotic-resistance patterns, ciprofloxacin can be used for selected:
Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Certain gastrointestinal bacterial infections
Typhoid/enteric fever when the organism is susceptible
Certain skin and soft-tissue infections
Certain bone and joint infections
Chronic bacterial prostatitis
Selected lower respiratory infections
Other susceptible bacterial infections
Not every infection is appropriately treated with ciprofloxacin, and antibiotic choice should be based on the suspected/confirmed organism and clinical situation. (DailyMed)
q.s. = quantity sufficient.
These are inactive ingredients needed to produce the tablet, maintain its stability, hardness and dissolution, and/or provide the film coating.
The exact excipients of Accott's Cipcot-500 cannot be confirmed from the photograph provided. Different manufacturers use different formulations. Published ciprofloxacin tablets, for example, may contain ingredients such as microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, colloidal silicon dioxide, polyethylene glycol, sodium starch glycolate and titanium dioxide. These are examples from other formulations, not a confirmed excipient list for Cipcot-500. (DailyMed)
Ciprofloxacin is a prescription antibiotic with some important safety warnings.
Tendon problems: Fluoroquinolones can cause tendinitis and tendon rupture. Risk is higher in older adults and people taking corticosteroids. (DailyMed)
Nerve effects: Peripheral neuropathy can occur and may sometimes be prolonged or irreversible.
CNS effects: Dizziness, agitation, confusion or other nervous-system effects can occur.
Heart rhythm: Ciprofloxacin can prolong the QT interval in susceptible people. (DailyMed)
Blood glucose: Abnormal blood glucose, including hypoglycemia, can occur.
Severe allergy: Stop and seek medical attention for serious allergic symptoms.
Severe/persistent diarrhea: Antibiotic-associated C. difficile diarrhea can occur. (DailyMed)
Myasthenia gravis: Ciprofloxacin can worsen muscle weakness and should generally be avoided in people with myasthenia gravis. (DailyMed)
Ciprofloxacin absorption can be reduced by antacids and products containing calcium, magnesium, aluminum or iron. These should generally be separated from ciprofloxacin according to the prescribing instructions.
Also, ciprofloxacin must not be taken with tizanidine, because this combination is specifically contraindicated. (DailyMed)
CIPCOT-500 = Ciprofloxacin 500 mg per tablet
Class: Fluoroquinolone antibiotic
Main action: Inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase/topoisomerase IV
Use: Selected susceptible bacterial infections
Not: A painkiller, steroid, antihistamine, or antiviral.
Because ciprofloxacin has significant adverse-effect and resistance considerations, Cipcot-500 should be taken only when prescribed for an appropriate bacterial infection, rather than for routine fever, cold or viral cough. (DailyMed)
